 Introduction
Purpose

The new student orientation programme is compulsory for all full-time first year students in SHTM. The programme will prepare you for university life and will help you:

o Get to know SHTM teaching staff and facilities available in the campus
o Recognize your learning style and discover your learning strengths
o Explore essential learning and group working skills
o Recognize the importance of professional grooming and classroom behaviors
o Understand PolyU requirements for academic integrity.

Workshop

While most of our activities will take place in a 3-dimensional interactive virtual campus, called “HKPolyU Campus” (see below), you need to attend an Introductory Workshop in our real campus in Hung Hom between 6 – 9 August 2008. Prizes will be awarded to active participants and best performers in the organized competitions.

Virtual Campus

The School of Hotel and Tourism Management (SHTM) and the School of Design (SD) have jointly developed a virtual, interactive, 3-dimensional student orientation island, inside Second Life to help students become familiar with the requirements of university life. In the Virtual Campus, you will transform into an avatar and have an opportunity to explore the campus and team up with fellow students to carry out a series of informative, competitive and fun educational activities.

In addition to the activities, there are opportunities for you to meet with senior students and teachers of the School, and even receive virtual gifts on successful completion of the activities!

How can you access the Virtual Campus?

To access the Virtual Campus, you need to:
1. Have a computer which can run Second Life, or use a computer at HTRC (GH206) in PolyU.
2. Download and install Second Life to your computer at http://www.secondlife.com
3. Join the orientation programme at HKPolyU Campus website http://project.shtm.polyu.edu.hk/sotel/joinus.php
